GTM in the Age of AI: Prioritising Impact Over Buzz

In the constantly evolving world of AI, the latest breakthroughs and innovations often capture headlines. However, for those of us in GTM roles, the focus should be on real-world impact rather than chasing every new trend. It's about cutting through the buzz to harness technologies that deliver genuine business value and drive efficiency, ensuring our strategies remain robust and aligned with core objectives.

So, what does the layperson make of this, the person in the trenches whose KPI’s or priorities haven’t changed.

Here are some practical considerations for those of us in GTM roles amid all the AI noise:

  1. Strip away the hype

Competition is healthy - it challenges the status quo and forces us to scrutinise the true value behind every shiny tool. The takeaway for GTM professionals is to continue to focus on real business benefits rather than getting lost in the technical minutiae (see Gartner’s Hype Cycle).

  2. Alignment with KPIs

Rapid advancements in AI doesn’t necessarily translate in changes to our key performance indicators. Experimentation with integrating AI in a way that enhances customer insights, refines targeting and streamline processes without derailing established strategies is the right approach to proving continuous but responsible progress. Consider AI as your enabler, not a replacement for sound market tactics.

  3. Invest in resilience and flexibility

Invest in training and continuous knowledge-sharing to build not only organisational resilience but also to empower your team both professionally and personally. Establishing an AI capability benchmark across your group means that the team is actively engaged with AI’s changing landscape as it relates to organisational goals. This collaborative approach accelerates testing, learning, and success while boosting individual skill sets and job satisfaction.

  4. Communicate and Collaborate

Finally, amid all this noise, clear communication cross-functionally is vital. Sharing insights and challenges helps demystify AI, ensuring that everyone - from the frontline to leadership - understands how these tools support overall business objectives.  Experimentation and continuous improvements will happen more collaboratively and faster if you’re supporting a combination of training and knowledge transfer.

In summary, while the hamster wheel that is the AI landscape continues to accelerate, it’s easy to feel left behind, which can mean we are compelled back to safety and dive back into what we’ve always done. What should help is remembering that the foundation doesn’t shift - focus, alignment to goals, training and communication.  Instead, use AI technology to enable the delivery of real value and enhanced efficiency to maintain agility in GTM processes and workflows.
